The diagnosis of hypocalcaemia is usually achieved by careful consideration of the clinical setting, and measurements of serum calcium and phosphate concentrations.
In patients with suspected pseudohypoparathyroidism, measurement of plasma PTH is very useful and has, in most cases, replaced the measurement of responses of target organs to a PTH infusion or injection. Plasma PTH is elevated in pseudohyperparathyroidism.
